Addiction Support & Neurological Recovery at ReGen Advanced Infusion & Wellness

Addiction support and recovery is extremely complex and needs to be individualized for each patient. At ReGen, we offer supplemental addiction therapies to traditional treatment regimens.

1) Ketamine Infusion Therapy and Ketamine Assisted Psychotherapy

Ketamine infusion therapy and Ketamine Assisted Psychotherapy (KAP) are helpful adjuncts to standard addiction treatment. Ketamine works in the brain and helps increase neuroplasticity, assisting the brain in making the changes necessary to overcome addictions.

Ketamine also helps with many of the symptoms that can accompany addictions, such as depression and anxiety.

2) Peptides and Supplements

GLP-1 peptides (semaglutide and tirzepatide) have been shown to help reduce cravings. This is what makes them effective in weight loss for many patients. They also provide a significant boost to those struggling with addiction to overcome their cravings and help them focus on their treatment plans.

When Substance Use Requires Medical Evaluation

Not all substance use requires medical care—but certain signs mean professional evaluation is strongly recommended:

Immediate/emergent evaluation

  • Overdose symptoms (slow breathing, unconsciousness)
  • Severe withdrawal symptoms, such as shakes, seizures, hallucinations, and agitation
  • Suicidal thoughts or severe depression
  • Hallucinations or paranoia

Clinical evaluation recommended

  • Increasing tolerance, increasing the amount of the substance to maintain the same result
  • Loss of control over use, using enough of a substance that you don’t remember what happens when you are intoxicated
  • Cravings that interfere with daily life, using in situations that are not appropriate
  • Using substances to avoid withdrawal or dealing with emotional distress
  • Declining work, relationships, or health
  • Repeated failed attempts to quit

Addiction is now recognized as a chronic, relapsing brain disorder—not a willpower issue.

How Addiction Affects the Brain & Reward System

Addiction fundamentally rewires the brain. Understanding this helps explain why stopping is so difficult, and why treatment must go beyond willpower.

1) The Reward System Gets Rewired

  • The brain’s reward pathways (including the nucleus accumbens and dopamine pathways) are designed to reinforce behaviors that are essential for survival.
  • Substances trigger massive dopamine surges, far exceeding natural rewards.
  • Over time, the brain learns: “This substance = survival priority”

2) Dopamine/Reward System Becomes Dysregulated

  • Repeated substance use reduces your baseline dopamine function
  • Natural rewards (food, relationships, achievements) feel less satisfying
  • The brain becomes dependent on the substance just to feel normal
  • This leads people from “Using to feel good” to “Using to feel okay”

3) The Stress/Withdrawal System

  • The stress center of the brain (amygdala) becomes overactive
  • Withdrawal symptoms include:
    • Anxiety
    • Irritability
    • Dysphoria

People will sometimes continue to use substances for relief from discomfort, not for pleasure

4) Loss of Executive Control

  • The decision-making and impulse control center of the brain (prefrontal cortex) weakens
  • Many decisions became compulsive, even though people know the substance use is harming them, they feel like they can’t stop

5) The Addiction Becomes Cyclic

Addiction typically follows a repeating loop:

  1. Binging / Intoxication for a dopamine surge
  2. Withdrawal / Negative state leads to stress and discomfort
  3. Preoccupation / Craving leads to obsessive thinking
