What is Vitamin B12?

Vitamin B12 (commonly known as cobalamin) is one of several vitamins essential for your body’s cells to function correctly. It is a cofactor in energy metabolism in the mitochondria of the cells. It also helps with DNA synthesis. It is required for the proper functioning of your nervous system and the proper development of your red blood cells.

Diagnostics

Simple laboratory tests can give us an idea of how much Vitamin B12 is circulating in your blood. It doesn’t give us the entire picture. Many people have adequate vitamin B12, but your body is not able to use it because it isn’t able to process it correctly. See if vitamin B12 could be the cause of your symptoms.

Treatment Options

Vitamin B12 is available in many foods. Many supplements contain B12. Some people need a stronger boost and need an injection or infusion of B12.

Lifestyle Changes

Nutritional changes can help give your body vitamin B12 and other essential vitamins.

How does Vitamin B12 work?

Vitamin B12 supplementation provides your body with this essential vitamin, which is then used by your cells to maintain neurological function, red blood cell synthesis, and DNA synthesis, as well as energy production. It also works as a scavenger of radical ions to reduce overall body oxidative stress.

Will Vitamin B12 work for me?

Everyone needs vitamin B12. If you have insufficient amounts of the vitamin in your system, your cells can’t perform certain processes to keep your body healthy. If your body is low on vitamin B12, a supplemental boost of B12 can have dramatic effects.

Conditions that may benefit from vitamin B12 supplementation:
Brain function: “Brain fog,” memory problems, cognitive impairment, insomnia, headaches (especially migraine), behavioral changes, learning problems, nominal aphasia

Mental health: Mood swings, irritability, depression, anxiety, hallucinations, delusions, psychosis

Sensory: Peripheral paraesthesia (“pins and needles”), numbness, neuropathic pains, poor balance, reduced vibration sense or proprioception (joint position sense), tinnitus, ataxia, taste impairment, sometimes myelopathy

Constitutional: Fatigue, anemia (either macrocytic or normocytic when also iron deficient or associated with thalassemia minor), other cytopenias, abdominal complaints, malabsorption, failure to thrive, weight loss, diarrhea, hyperpigmentation, glossitis (aphthous) stomatitis, infertility, urinary tract infections

Motor: Muscle weakness, altered reflexes (increased in degeneration of the spinal cord, reduced when peripheral neuropathy dominates), spasticity, seizures, cardiomyopathy

Autonomic: Urinary and/or fecal incontinence, postural hypotension or dizziness, erectile dysfunction
Chronic illness or inflammation: Chronic illnesses and inflammation from infection or auto-immune diseases can consume your vitamin B12 reserves and make it more difficult for your cells to perform appropriately.
